Forces
Stretching, bending and compressing; elastic and plastic
- 2 things to know
- Paper 1
Overview
The three ways forces change shape and why at least two forces are needed, the forces that stretch a spring, bend a diving board and compress a pillar, elastic and plastic deformation and how to tell them apart, and why an overstretched spring stays longer.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
A spring hangs from a hook with a mass attached to its lower end. Name the two forces that stretch the spring.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Name the three ways in which forces can change the shape of an object.
Model answer
They can stretch it, bend it or compress it.
- 2
What is the smallest number of forces that must act on an object in order to change its shape?
Model answer
Two.
- 3
Explain why a single force acting on its own cannot stretch an object.
Model answer
A single unbalanced force simply makes the whole object accelerate in that direction, so a second force acting the opposite way is needed before the object is stretched.
- 4
A spring hangs from a hook with a mass attached to its lower end. Name the two forces that stretch the spring.
Model answer
The downward weight of the mass and the upward force of the hook holding the top of the spring.
- 5
Explain how a diving board is bent when a swimmer stands on its free end.
Model answer
The swimmer pushes the free end downwards while the fixed support pushes upwards at the other end, and these two forces bend the board.
- 6
Describe the pair of forces that compress a pillar holding up a roof.
Model answer
The weight of the roof pushes down on the top of the pillar while the ground pushes up on its base.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Forces, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
