Radiation and the temperature of a body, and seismic waves and sonar
- 3 things to know
- Paper 4
Overview
How the balance of absorbed and emitted radiation sets the temperature of a road, a white surface and the Earth, how the atmosphere affects incoming and outgoing radiation, P and S seismic waves and what they reveal about the Earth's core, and finding the depth of water by sonar.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What determines the overall temperature of the Earth?
How does the atmosphere affect the radiation from the Sun that passes through it?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What decides whether the temperature of a body rises, falls or stays the same?
Model answer
The balance between the radiation it absorbs and the radiation it emits.
- 2
What happens to the temperature of a body that absorbs radiation faster than it emits it?
Model answer
Its temperature rises.
- 3
What must be true for a body to stay at a constant temperature?
Model answer
It must emit radiation at exactly the same rate as it absorbs it.
- 4
Explain why a road surface gets hot during a sunny day and cools during the night.
Model answer
By day it absorbs radiation from the Sun faster than it emits, so it warms, and at night there is no sunlight to absorb so it emits more than it absorbs and cools.
- 5
Explain why a shiny white surface stays cooler in sunshine than a matt black one.
Model answer
The white surface reflects most of the radiation that falls on it and absorbs little, so it takes in energy more slowly and reaches a lower temperature at balance.
- 6
What determines the overall temperature of the Earth?
Model answer
The balance between the radiation absorbed from the Sun and the radiation the Earth emits into space.
