The structure and function of the eye
- 3 things to know
- Paper 1
Overview
The cornea and lens and how the ciliary muscles and suspensory ligaments focus on near and distant objects, the iris and pupil in bright light, rods and cones in the retina, the three types of cone cell, and the optic nerve.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Describe how the eye focuses on a nearby object.
Describe how the eye focuses on a distant object.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the function of the cornea?
Model answer
It is the clear layer at the front of the eye that refracts light and does most of the focusing.
- 2
What is the function of the lens of the eye?
Model answer
It changes shape to fine-focus the light onto the retina.
- 3
Describe how the eye focuses on a nearby object.
Model answer
The ciliary muscles contract, the suspensory ligaments slacken and the lens becomes fatter and more curved.
- 4
Describe how the eye focuses on a distant object.
Model answer
The ciliary muscles relax, the suspensory ligaments are pulled tight and the lens is stretched thin.
- 5
What is the function of the iris?
Model answer
It changes the size of the pupil, which controls how much light enters the eye.
- 6
Explain what happens to the pupil in very bright light.
Model answer
The circular muscles of the iris contract so the pupil becomes smaller, letting in less light and protecting the retina.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Cells and Control, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
