Current and potential difference in series and parallel
- 3 things to know
- Physics Paper 1
Overview
The two ways of joining components and how to identify series and parallel circuits, how current and potential difference are shared in each, adding resistances in series with calculations, the total current drawn by a parallel circuit, and why resistors in parallel have a total resistance smaller than the smallest of them.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
A 4 Ω resistor and a 6 Ω resistor are joined in series. Calculate the total resistance.
Write in symbols the rule for the total resistance of two resistors in series, and give the unit.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What are the two ways of joining electrical components in a circuit?
Model answer
In series and in parallel.
- 2
What is meant by components being connected in series?
Model answer
They are joined one after another in a single loop, so the same current passes through each of them.
- 3
What is meant by components being connected in parallel?
Model answer
They are joined side by side on separate branches, so the charge has more than one path it can follow.
- 4
Can one circuit contain both series and parallel parts?
Model answer
Yes, many circuits have some components in series with a section that is wired in parallel.
- 5
A circuit contains one cell and three lamps joined one after another in a single loop. How are the lamps connected?
Model answer
In series.
- 6
How does the current through each component in a series circuit compare?
Model answer
The current is the same through every component.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Electricity, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
