What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a database, and what makes one relational?
How is a database table organised into rows?
What does an INSERT INTO command do in SQL?
What does SQL stand for, and what is it used for?
A table Pupil has fields PupilID, Name and Form. What does INSERT INTO Pupil (PupilID, Name, Form) VALUES (27, 'Amir Khan', '10B') do?
What is a database?
What does the SELECT part of an SQL query do?
Why must the values in an INSERT INTO command be in the same order as the listed fields?

Commonly confused
Pairs that lose marks when they are blurred together.
Primary key vs Foreign key
Primary key: a field whose value uniquely identifies each record in its own table. Foreign key: a field that links to the unique identifier of a record in another table.
Record vs Field
Record: one row of a table holding all the data about one item. Field: one column of a table holding one kind of data for every item.
Data redundancy vs Data inconsistency
Data redundancy: the same facts being stored more than once without need. Data inconsistency: copies of the same facts that no longer match each other.
Questions from this topic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a database?
Model answer
A database is an organised, persistent collection of data. The data is stored so that it can be searched, sorted and updated easily.
- 2
What is a relational database?
Model answer
A relational database stores data in several separate tables that are linked together. The links are made through fields the tables share.
- 3
What is a table in a database?
Model answer
A table holds the data about one kind of thing, such as students or books. A table is made up of rows and columns.
- 4
What is a record in a database table?
Model answer
A record is one row of a table. A record holds all the data about a single item, such as one student.
- 5
What is a field in a database table?
Model answer
A field is one column of a table. A field holds one piece of data about every record, such as each student's surname.
- 6
What is a data type in a database?
Model answer
A data type sets what kind of value a field can hold. Common data types are integer, real, text, Boolean and date/time.
