- 3 things to know
- Paper 2
Overview
SELECT, FROM, WHERE and ORDER BY with ascending and descending sorts, worked queries on small tables, text in quotation marks, and queries that join two linked tables.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.

What does the SELECT part of an SQL query do?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does SQL stand for, and what is it used for?
Model answer
SQL stands for Structured Query Language. SQL is used to search for and change data in a relational database.
- 2
What does the SELECT part of an SQL query do?
Model answer
The SELECT command lists the fields that the query returns. An asterisk after SELECT returns every field.
- 3
What does the FROM part of an SQL query do?
Model answer
The FROM clause names the table or tables that the data is taken from.
- 4
What does the WHERE part of an SQL query do?
Model answer
The WHERE clause sets a condition that each record must meet to be returned. Records that fail the condition are left out of the results.
- 5
What does ORDER BY do in an SQL query, and what do ASC and DESC mean?
Model answer
The ORDER BY clause sorts the results by a chosen field. ASC sorts in ascending order and DESC sorts in descending order.
- 6
How are the results sorted if a query ends ORDER BY Name with neither ASC nor DESC?
Model answer
The results are sorted in ascending order, from A to Z. Ascending is the default order.
