Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is a questionnaire?

    Model answer

A questionnaire is a set of written questions answered by respondents, on paper or online. Questionnaires can reach large samples quickly and cheaply.

  2. 2

    What is a social survey?

    Model answer

A social survey collects the same information from a large number of people, usually by questionnaire or structured interview. Surveys produce mainly quantitative data.

  3. 3

Who is a respondent in sociological research?

    Model answer

A respondent is a person who answers a questionnaire or interview in a study. Respondents are chosen through the sampling method.

  4. 4

What is a closed question? Give an example.

    Model answer

A closed question gives respondents a fixed set of answers to choose from. An example is a tick-box question on how many hours a week a pupil spends on homework.

  5. 5

What is an open question? Give an example.

    Model answer

An open question lets respondents answer freely in their own words. An example is asking a parent to describe how their family shares household tasks.

  6. 6

What is an attitude survey? Give a UK example.

    Model answer

An attitude survey measures people's opinions and values on social issues. The British Social Attitudes survey has asked adults in Britain their views on issues such as marriage since 1983.
