Work done and the energy changes it causes
- 3 things to know
- Paper 2
Overview
The work done equation with force and distance calculations, why the distance is along the force, and the store changes when work lifts, drives, brakes or stretches something.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Calculate the work done when a force of 20 N moves an object 5 m in the direction of the force.
Calculate the work done when a force of 300 N pushes a stiff drawer shut through 0.5 m.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State the equation for the work done by a force.
Model answer
Work done = force × distance moved in the direction of the force.
- 2
Calculate the work done when a force of 20 N moves an object 5 m in the direction of the force.
Model answer
Work done = 20 × 5 = 100 J.
- 3
Calculate the work done when a force of 300 N pushes a stiff drawer shut through 0.5 m.
Model answer
Work done = 300 × 0.5 = 150 J.
- 4
A force of 40 N does 600 J of work pulling a sledge. Calculate the distance the sledge moves in the direction of the force.
Model answer
Distance = 600 ÷ 40 = 15 m.
- 5
A trolley is moved 9 m and 450 J of work is done on it. Calculate the size of the force.
Model answer
Force = 450 ÷ 9 = 50 N.
- 6
Calculate the work done in lifting a 15 kg box through 2 m, taking gravitational field strength as 10 N/kg.
Model answer
The weight is 150 N, so the work done = 150 × 2 = 300 J.
