Acceleration and the equation v squared minus u squared
- 3 things to know
- Paper 1
Overview
The acceleration equation and its unit, calculating acceleration, deceleration, final velocity and time, and using (final velocity)² − (initial velocity)² = 2 × acceleration × distance to find speeds, decelerations and distances.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
State the unit of acceleration.
A car speeds up from 4 m/s to 24 m/s in 5 s. Calculate its acceleration.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State in words the equation used to calculate acceleration.
Model answer
Acceleration = change in velocity ÷ time taken.
- 2
State the unit of acceleration.
Model answer
Acceleration is measured in metres per second squared, m/s².
- 3
A car speeds up from 4 m/s to 24 m/s in 5 s. Calculate its acceleration.
Model answer
(24 − 4) ÷ 5 = 4 m/s².
- 4
A cyclist slows from 12 m/s to 3 m/s in 6 s. Calculate the acceleration.
Model answer
(3 − 12) ÷ 6 = −1.5 m/s², a deceleration of 1.5 m/s².
- 5
What does a negative value of acceleration tell you about an object?
Model answer
It means the object is slowing down, which is a deceleration.
- 6
A train starts from rest and accelerates at 0.5 m/s² for 40 s. Calculate its final velocity.
Model answer
0.5 × 40 = 20 m/s.
