Newton's first law, and investigating force, mass and acceleration
- 3 things to know
- Paper 1
Overview
Newton's first law and resultant force, forces on objects at rest or at constant velocity, the trolley investigation into force, mass and acceleration with its variables, errors and safety, and writing hypotheses, plotting graphs and drawing conclusions.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
State the first of Newton's laws of motion.
A car travels at a steady 20 m/s along a straight road. State the resultant force on the car.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State the first of Newton's laws of motion.
Model answer
An object stays at rest, or keeps moving at constant velocity, unless a resultant force acts on it.
- 2
What is meant by the resultant force on an object?
Model answer
It is the single force that has the same effect as all the forces acting on the object together.
- 3
A car travels at a steady 20 m/s along a straight road. State the resultant force on the car.
Model answer
The resultant force is zero, because the velocity is constant.
- 4
A book lies at rest on a table. Describe the forces on the book and the resultant force.
Model answer
Its weight acts downwards and an equal upward force from the table balances it, so the resultant force is zero.
- 5
Two forces of 12 N and 5 N act on a box along the same line but in opposite directions. Calculate the resultant force.
Model answer
The resultant is 12 − 5 = 7 N, acting in the direction of the 12 N force.
- 6
Forces of 8 N and 6 N act on a trolley in the same direction. State the resultant force.
Model answer
The resultant is 14 N in that same direction.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Motion and Forces, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
