- 3 things to know
- Paper 2
Overview
Why fluid pressure acts at right angles to every surface, from tank walls to a submarine hull and a swimmer's ears, and how spreading or concentrating a force changes the pressure.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Explain why the water in a tank pushes outwards on the sides as well as downwards on the base.
Explain why a swimmer under water feels the water pressing on their ears whichever way they turn their head.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State the direction of the force that the pressure in a fluid exerts on a surface.
Model answer
At right angles, or normal, to that surface.
- 2
Explain why the water in a tank pushes outwards on the sides as well as downwards on the base.
Model answer
The pressure in a fluid causes a force at right angles to every surface the fluid touches.
- 3
Describe the direction of the force that the surrounding sea water exerts on the hull of a submarine.
Model answer
It acts perpendicular to the hull at every point, pressing inwards all over it.
- 4
Explain why a swimmer under water feels the water pressing on their ears whichever way they turn their head.
Model answer
The pressure in a fluid causes a force normal to each surface, so the ears are pressed on in any orientation.
- 5
State what is meant by a force acting normal to a surface.
Model answer
The force acts at 90° to that surface.
- 6
Describe how the pressure on a surface changes when the same force is spread over a smaller area.
Model answer
The pressure increases.
