Calculating density, and investigating it
- 3 things to know
- Paper 2
Overview
The density equation and kg/m³, calculations of density, mass and volume, measuring regular and irregular solids and liquids, sources of error, and density as a property of the material.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Name the unit of density used when mass is measured in kilograms and volume in cubic metres.
Calculate the density of a block of mass 1.5 kg and volume 0.0020 m³.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State the equation linking density, mass and volume.
Model answer
Density = mass ÷ volume.
- 2
Name the unit of density used when mass is measured in kilograms and volume in cubic metres.
Model answer
The kilogram per cubic metre, kg/m³.
- 3
Calculate the density of a block of mass 1.5 kg and volume 0.0020 m³.
Model answer
Density = 1.5 ÷ 0.0020 = 750 kg/m³.
- 4
A piece of aluminium of density 2700 kg/m³ has a mass of 5.4 kg. Calculate its volume.
Model answer
Volume = 5.4 ÷ 2700 = 0.0020 m³.
- 5
Calculate the mass of 0.25 m³ of water, which has a density of 1000 kg/m³.
Model answer
Mass = 1000 × 0.25 = 250 kg.
- 6
A sample of oil has a mass of 240 g and a volume of 300 cm³. Calculate its density in kg/m³.
Model answer
The mass is 0.24 kg and the volume is 3.0 × 10⁻⁴ m³, so the density is 0.24 ÷ (3.0 × 10⁻⁴) = 800 kg/m³.
Other ways to work this

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Particle Model, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
