Inertial mass and momentum
- 3 things to know
- Paper 1
Overview
Inertial mass as a measure of how hard it is to change velocity and as force divided by acceleration, then momentum as mass × velocity, its unit kg m/s, calculations with it and why it is a vector.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
State how inertial mass is defined in terms of force and acceleration.
Calculate the inertial mass of an object that accelerates at 4 m/s² when a resultant force of 30 N acts on it.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by the inertial mass of an object?
Model answer
Inertial mass is a measure of how difficult it is to change the velocity of the object.
- 2
State how inertial mass is defined in terms of force and acceleration.
Model answer
Inertial mass is the ratio of the force applied to the acceleration it produces.
- 3
Calculate the inertial mass of an object that accelerates at 4 m/s² when a resultant force of 30 N acts on it.
Model answer
30 ÷ 4 = 7.5 kg.
- 4
Two trolleys are given the same resultant force and one accelerates less than the other. Compare their inertial masses.
Model answer
The trolley with the smaller acceleration has the greater inertial mass.
- 5
Explain why a loaded lorry is harder to get moving from rest than an empty one.
Model answer
The loaded lorry has a greater inertial mass, so a larger force is needed for the same acceleration.
- 6
Explain how measuring an acceleration allows the inertial mass of an object to be found.
Model answer
The known resultant force is divided by the measured acceleration to give the inertial mass.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Motion and Forces, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
