Uses of ultrasound and infrasound
- 3 things to know
- Paper 1
Overview
Sonar depth finding, ultrasound imaging of a foetus and of cracks in castings, and how earthquake waves reveal the layers and the liquid core of the Earth.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Give one reason why ultrasound rather than X-rays is used to scan a foetus.
Explain how very low frequency waves are used to study the structure of the Earth's core.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Describe how sonar is used to find the depth of water beneath a ship.
Model answer
A pulse of ultrasound is sent downwards and the time for the echo from the seabed to return is measured, giving the depth from half that journey.
- 2
A sonar echo returns to a ship 0.50 s after the pulse is sent, with sound travelling at 1500 m/s in seawater. Calculate the depth of the water.
Model answer
The round trip is 1500 × 0.50 = 750 m, so the depth is 375 m.
- 3
Explain how ultrasound is used to produce an image of a foetus.
Model answer
Ultrasound is partly reflected at each boundary between different tissues, and the timing and strength of the echoes are used to build the image.
- 4
Give one reason why ultrasound rather than X-rays is used to scan a foetus.
Model answer
Ultrasound is not ionising, so it does not damage the cells of the developing foetus.
- 5
Explain how very low frequency waves are used to study the structure of the Earth's core.
Model answer
Waves from earthquakes travel through the Earth, and the changes in their speed and direction reveal the layers they have passed through.
- 6
State what the S-wave shadow zone, the region of the Earth's surface that receives no S waves after an earthquake, reveals about the interior.
Model answer
Part of the core is liquid, because S waves are transverse and cannot travel through liquids.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Waves, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
