- 1
What long-term trend in crime does the Crime Survey for England and Wales show?
Model answer
The Crime Survey for England and Wales shows crime peaked in 1995 and has fallen substantially since. Fraud and computer misuse, counted in headline figures since 2017, now form a large share.
- 2
What are official crime statistics?
Model answer
Official crime statistics are figures produced by government bodies, including crimes recorded by the police and court and prison records. The ONS and Home Office publish police recorded crime.
- 3
Give two strengths of police recorded crime statistics.
Model answer
Police recorded crime figures are cheap to obtain and cover every police force area. Serious, well-reported crimes such as homicide are recorded fairly accurately.
- 4
What is the dark figure of crime?
Model answer
The dark figure is the crime that never appears in official statistics because it is unreported or unrecorded. Victim surveys suggest it is very large.
- 5
Why do victims not report some crimes to the police?
Model answer
Victims may see the crime as too trivial or believe the police can do nothing. Fear of reprisals, distrust of the police and shame can deter victims of domestic abuse.
- 6
Why might a crime reported to the police go unrecorded?
Model answer
Officers use discretion and may decide an incident is too minor or lacks evidence. Pressure to meet targets has also led some forces to under-record crime.
