Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Explain the significance of Guru Nanak's life for Sikhs.
Model answer
Sikhs date the tradition to his experience of being commissioned, after which he taught that ritual identity counts for nothing beside truthful devotion, travelled widely in dialogue with other traditions, and settled at Kartarpur to found a working community with common worship and a shared kitchen. Appointing a successor rather than a son established that the office followed spiritual fitness, not blood.
- 2
What did Guru Gobind Singh do in 1699?
Model answer
At the spring gathering at Anandpur he called for those willing to give their heads, initiated the five who came forward with sweetened water stirred by a double-edged sword, and then asked them to initiate him in turn. The Khalsa was constituted with a code of conduct, outward signs, and the names Singh and Kaur.
- 3
What did Guru Gobind Singh decide in 1708?
Model answer
Shortly before his death at Nanded he ended the succession of living Gurus and conferred guruship on the scripture. Sikhs also speak of authority resting with the Panth, so the Word and the community together took the place of a personal Guru.
- 4
Why is Guru Arjun's death treated as a turning point?
Model answer
He was the first Guru to be executed, put to death at Lahore in 1606 under the emperor Jahangir, whose own memoir records the decision. Sikhs read it as the moment the community learned that faithfulness might cost life, and his son took up temporal as well as spiritual authority in its aftermath.
- 5
Why is Guru Tegh Bahadur's martyrdom regarded as distinctive?
Model answer
He was beheaded in Delhi in 1675 after intervening on behalf of Kashmiri Brahmins facing forced conversion, that is, for the religious freedom of a community not his own. Sikhs honour him as the shield of the country, and companions who went with him were executed alongside him.
- 6
What did the middle Gurus contribute?
Model answer
Guru Angad developed the Gurmukhi script and extended the langar; Guru Amar Das organised congregations under appointed local leaders, opposed sati and veiling, and required visitors to eat in langar before meeting him; Guru Ram Das founded the town that became Amritsar and composed the marriage hymn; Guru Har Rai and the child Guru Har Krishan are remembered for healing and compassion.
