Preventing rusting
- 3 things to know
- Paper 1
Overview
Preventing rusting by painting, oiling and drying agents that exclude oxygen and water, sacrificial protection with magnesium blocks, galvanising with zinc, and why a tin coating protects only while it is unbroken.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Explain how painting a steel gate prevents it from rusting.
Give one disadvantage of relying on paint to prevent rusting.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Explain how painting a steel gate prevents it from rusting.
Model answer
The paint forms a barrier that keeps oxygen and water away from the iron surface.
- 2
Give one disadvantage of relying on paint to prevent rusting.
Model answer
If the paint is scratched, oxygen and water reach the iron and rusting starts at that point.
- 3
Explain why oiling a bicycle chain prevents it from rusting.
Model answer
The oil coats the metal and excludes oxygen and water, and it can be reapplied to the moving parts.
- 4
Explain how storing steel tools in a sealed box with a drying agent slows rusting.
Model answer
The drying agent removes water vapour from the air, so water is excluded from the metal surface.
- 5
What is sacrificial protection?
Model answer
Sacrificial protection is attaching a more reactive metal that is oxidised in place of the metal being protected.
- 6
Explain why blocks of magnesium are bolted to the steel hull of a ship.
Model answer
Magnesium is more reactive than iron, so it is oxidised instead and the steel is protected until the blocks are used up.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Transition Metals, Quantitative Chemistry and Industrial Processes, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
