Operators and trace tables
- 3 things to know
- Paper 1
Overview
Modulus, integer division and exponentiation with worked values, the order of operations, relational and logical operators in conditions, and trace tables for short algorithms.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Describe what integer division returns.
State the values of 29 modulus 6 and 29 integer-divided by 6.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does the modulus operator return?
Model answer
The modulus operator returns the remainder left after a whole-number division. The expression 17 modulus 5 gives 2, because 5 × 3 = 15.
- 2
Describe what integer division returns.
Model answer
Integer division returns the whole number of times one number goes into another. Any remainder is discarded, so 17 integer-divided by 5 gives 3.
- 3
State the values of 29 modulus 6 and 29 integer-divided by 6.
Model answer
The modulus is 5 and the integer division gives 4. The check is 4 × 6 + 5 = 29.
- 4
What is 2 raised to the power 5, using the exponentiation operator?
Model answer
The value of 2 to the power 5 is 32. Exponentiation multiplies 2 by itself five times.
- 5
How can the modulus operator show whether a whole number is even?
Model answer
A number is even when the number modulus 2 gives 0. An odd number always leaves a remainder of 1.
- 6
What is the value of 7 + 3 × 2, and why?
Model answer
The value is 13. Multiplication is carried out before addition, so 3 × 2 = 6 is worked out first.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Computational Thinking, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
