Network protocols
- 3 things to know
- Paper 1
Overview
Why protocols are needed, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, TCP and IP, HTTP and HTTPS, FTP, and how SMTP, POP3 and IMAP handle email.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why are standard network protocols needed?
What is Ethernet?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a network protocol?
Model answer
A protocol is a set of rules for how data is formatted and transmitted between devices. Devices must follow the same protocol to understand each other.
- 2
Why are standard network protocols needed?
Model answer
Standard protocols let devices from different manufacturers communicate. Protocols also set how data is addressed and how errors are detected.
- 3
What is Ethernet?
Model answer
Ethernet is a family of protocols for sending data over wired LAN connections. Ethernet sets how data is packaged and addressed on the cable.
- 4
What is Wi-Fi?
Model answer
Wi-Fi is a family of protocols for wireless LAN connections using radio waves. Wi-Fi devices connect to the network through a wireless access point.
- 5
What are the roles of TCP and IP within the TCP/IP protocol suite?
Model answer
TCP breaks data into packets and makes sure they all arrive correctly. IP addresses each packet and routes it to its destination.
- 6
What is HTTP used for?
Model answer
HTTP is the protocol web browsers use to request web pages from web servers. The server sends the page back to the browser using HTTP.

The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Networks, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
