- 3 things to know
- Paper 1
Overview
Why computers are networked, LANs and WANs, the internet, IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, and how routers forward packets across networks.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How does a network help an organisation manage its computers?
What are the disadvantages of connecting computers in a network?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why are computers connected in a network?
Model answer
Networked computers can share resources such as printers, files and an internet connection. Users can also communicate by email and messaging and work on shared files.
- 2
How does a network help an organisation manage its computers?
Model answer
Software can be installed and updated on every computer from one central point. Files can be backed up centrally, and users can log in from any machine.
- 3
What are the disadvantages of connecting computers in a network?
Model answer
A network costs money to set up and needs specialist staff to manage it. Malware and attackers can spread from one computer to the others.
- 4
What is a LAN?
Model answer
A local area network connects devices across a small area such as a home, school or office. The organisation usually owns the cables and equipment.
- 5
What is a WAN?
Model answer
A wide area network connects devices or LANs across a large geographical area, such as between cities or countries. A WAN usually uses lines leased from telecommunications companies.
- 6
Give two examples of a WAN.
Model answer
The internet is the largest WAN. A bank linking its branches across the country uses a WAN as well.
