- Paper 1
Overview
Bits, nibbles and bytes, kibibytes, mebibytes, gibibytes and tebibytes with worked conversions, and lossless and lossy compression including run-length encoding.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a byte?
How many bytes are in a kibibyte?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a nibble?
Model answer
A nibble is a group of 4 bits, which is half a byte.
- 2
What is a byte?
Model answer
A byte is a group of 8 bits. One byte can hold a single ASCII character.
- 3
How many bytes are in a kibibyte?
Model answer
A kibibyte (KiB) is 1,024 bytes. The figure 1,024 is 2¹⁰.
- 4
How are the mebibyte, gibibyte and tebibyte related to one another?
Model answer
A mebibyte (MiB) is 1,024 KiB and a gibibyte (GiB) is 1,024 MiB. A tebibyte (TiB) is 1,024 GiB.
- 5
Why does a 1 MiB file hold more than 1,000,000 bytes?
Model answer
A mebibyte is 1,024 × 1,024 = 1,048,576 bytes. A megabyte, the decimal unit, is exactly 1,000,000 bytes.
- 6
Why is storage measured in binary multiples?
Model answer
Memory and storage are addressed in binary, so capacities come in powers of 2. A binary multiple such as 1,024 = 2¹⁰ fits that structure exactly.
Other ways to work this

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Data, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
