Global Challenges

Vaccines, medicines and aseptic technique

  • 3 things to know
  • Paper 2

Overview

What a vaccine contains and how it gives immunity, what antibiotics, antivirals, antiseptics and painkillers do and do not do, why drugs that kill viruses are hard to make, antibiotic resistance, aseptic technique with flamed loops, alcohol, autoclaves and taped dishes kept at 25 °C, and testing antiseptics with paper discs on a bacterial lawn, including calculating the area of clear zones.

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What does a vaccine contain?

    Model answer

A dead or weakened form of the pathogen, or just its antigens, so it cannot cause the disease.

  2. 2

Explain how being vaccinated makes a person immune to a disease.

    Model answer

The antigens in the vaccine make lymphocytes produce antibodies and memory cells, so if the real pathogen enters later it is destroyed before it causes illness.

  3. 3

What do antibiotics do, and which type of pathogen do they have no effect on?

    Model answer

They kill bacteria inside the body or stop them multiplying; they have no effect on viruses.

  4. 4

Explain why it is difficult to develop a drug that kills a virus without harming the patient.

    Model answer

Viruses reproduce inside the body's own cells, so a substance that destroys them tends to damage those cells as well.

  5. 5

    What do antiviral drugs do?

    Model answer

They slow or stop a virus reproducing inside cells, which reduces the symptoms and can keep an infection under control for years.

  6. 6

What is an antiseptic and where is it used?

    Model answer

A chemical that kills microorganisms or stops them growing, used outside the body on skin, wounds and surfaces.
