- 3 things to know
- J277/01
Overview
NICs, switches, routers and wireless access points, transmission media, the internet, how DNS turns a URL into an IP address, web hosting, and the cloud.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Describe how DNS is used when a URL is typed into a web browser.
What is the job of a NIC?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the job of a NIC?
Model answer
A NIC (Network Interface Controller) is the hardware that lets a device connect to a network. The NIC sends and receives data and holds the device's MAC address.
- 2
What does a switch do in a LAN?
Model answer
A switch connects the devices within a LAN. A switch receives data and sends it only to the device it is addressed to, using MAC addresses.
- 3
Why is a switch more efficient than sending every message to every device?
Model answer
A switch forwards data only to the intended device, so other links are not filled with unwanted traffic. Less unnecessary traffic means fewer collisions and faster transfers.
- 4
What is the main job of a router?
Model answer
A router forwards data packets between different networks. A router reads IP addresses to choose a route towards each packet's destination.
- 5
What does a home router connect together?
Model answer
A home router connects the home LAN to the internet. A home router usually contains a switch and a wireless access point in the same box.
- 6
What is a wireless access point (WAP)?
Model answer
A wireless access point lets wireless devices join a wired network. A WAP sends and receives radio signals and passes the data on to the wired network.
