- 3 things to know
- J277/02
Overview
Concatenation, length, substring, left, right, upper, lower, ASC and CHR with worked results, and opening, reading, writing and closing text files.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is concatenation?
What is output by first = "Ada", then last = "Lovelace", then print(first + " " + last)?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is concatenation?
Model answer
Concatenation joins two or more strings end to end to make one string. The + operator concatenates strings in OCR Exam Reference Language.
- 2
What is output by first = "Ada", then last = "Lovelace", then print(first + " " + last)?
Model answer
The code outputs Ada Lovelace. The string " " adds a space between the two names.
- 3
What does word.length give when word = "Keyboard"?
Model answer
The expression word.length gives 8. The string Keyboard contains eight characters.
- 4
What is slicing?
Model answer
Slicing means taking part of a string, called a substring. The .substring(x, i) method takes i characters starting at index x.
- 5
With word = "Keyboard", what does word.substring(2, 4) return?
Model answer
The call returns "yboa". Indexes start at 0, so index 2 is "y", and four characters are taken from there.
- 6
With word = "Keyboard", what do word.left(3) and word.right(4) return?
Model answer
The call word.left(3) returns "Key". The call word.right(4) returns "oard".
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Programming Fundamentals, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
