Energy transfer between trophic levels
- 3 things to know
- Paper 2
Overview
Trophic levels, the energy lost as heat, faeces and urine, why food chains stay short, pyramids of biomass, and calculating the percentage efficiency of a transfer.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
State three ways in which energy is lost at a trophic level instead of being passed on.
Explain why food chains rarely contain more than four or five trophic levels.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a trophic level?
Model answer
A trophic level is a feeding stage in a food chain, such as producer, primary consumer or secondary consumer.
- 2
State three ways in which energy is lost at a trophic level instead of being passed on.
Model answer
As heat released by respiration, in undigested material in faeces, and in excreted waste such as urine.
- 3
Explain why food chains rarely contain more than four or five trophic levels.
Model answer
So little energy is passed on at each stage that eventually there is not enough left to support another level of organisms.
- 4
Explain why there are usually far fewer top predators than herbivores in an ecosystem.
Model answer
Much less energy reaches the higher trophic levels, so only a small number of large predators can be supported.
- 5
What does a pyramid of biomass show?
Model answer
It shows the total mass of living material present at each trophic level of a food chain.
- 6
Explain why a pyramid of biomass is normally widest at its base.
Model answer
Biomass is lost between trophic levels, so each level holds less living material than the level below it.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Ecosystems and Material Cycles, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
