Unemployment (A2): Measurement and types
- 2 things to know
- A2 Units 3 and 4
Overview
Recall questions on Measurement and types.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
State four factors that determine the size of an economy's natural rate of unemployment.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does an economist mean by the natural rate of unemployment?
Model answer
It is the rate of unemployment that remains when the aggregate labour market is in equilibrium, so that the number of people willing and able to take work at the going real wage matches the number of jobs on offer.
- 2
Explain why the natural rate of unemployment is never zero.
Model answer
Even when the labour market clears, some workers are between jobs or still searching for a better match, and others lack the skills or the location that the available vacancies demand, so a pool of unemployment always remains.
- 3
Which kinds of unemployment make up the natural rate?
Model answer
It is made up of frictional unemployment (workers moving between jobs), structural unemployment (a mismatch of skills or location) and seasonal unemployment, all of which persist even when aggregate demand is adequate.
- 4
Why is the natural rate of unemployment also referred to as the NAIRU?
Model answer
Because it is the only rate at which inflation neither accelerates nor decelerates; the NAIRU is defined by stable inflation while the natural rate is defined by labour market equilibrium, and the two are normally treated as the same rate.
- 5
State four factors that determine the size of an economy's natural rate of unemployment.
Model answer
The generosity of out-of-work benefits relative to wages, the bargaining power of trade unions, the degree of occupational and geographical mobility, and the efficiency with which job-seekers and vacancies are matched.
- 6
Define equilibrium unemployment.
Model answer
Equilibrium unemployment is the unemployment that remains when the aggregate labour market clears, made up of people who are unwilling or unable to accept work at the current real wage; it is another name for the natural rate.
