Types and uses of electromagnetic waves
- 3 things to know
- Paper 2
Overview
Electromagnetic waves as transverse waves that transfer energy, the continuous spectrum and a single speed in a vacuum, the order of the groups by wavelength and frequency, the colours of visible light, energy transferred to an absorber, and the uses of radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays and gamma rays.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is meant by saying that the electromagnetic spectrum is continuous?
List the groups of the electromagnetic spectrum in order from the longest wavelength to the shortest.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What type of wave is every electromagnetic wave?
Model answer
A transverse wave.
- 2
What do electromagnetic waves transfer, and between what?
Model answer
They transfer energy from the source of the waves to an absorber.
- 3
What is meant by saying that the electromagnetic spectrum is continuous?
Model answer
The wavelengths run smoothly from one group to the next with no gaps between them.
- 4
How does the speed of radio waves through a vacuum compare with the speed of gamma rays?
Model answer
They are the same, because all electromagnetic waves travel at the same speed through a vacuum or air.
- 5
List the groups of the electromagnetic spectrum in order from the longest wavelength to the shortest.
Model answer
Radio, microwave, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays and gamma rays.
- 6
Which group of the electromagnetic spectrum has the highest frequency?
Model answer
Gamma rays.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Waves, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
