- Papers 1, 2 and 3
Overview
Recall questions on endocytosis, exocytosis, phagocytosis and pinocytosis, active transport by carrier proteins, the role of ATP, and how phosphorylation of ADP and hydrolysis of ATP make it the universal energy currency.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How is the water potential of plant tissue found from changes in mass or length, and why is percentage change used?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is endocytosis?
Model answer
The bulk uptake of material into a cell, in which the cell surface membrane folds inwards around the material and pinches off to form a vesicle inside the cytoplasm.
- 2
What is exocytosis?
Model answer
The bulk export of material from a cell, in which a vesicle moves to the cell surface membrane, fuses with it, and releases its contents outside the cell.
- 3
Distinguish between phagocytosis and pinocytosis.
Model answer
Phagocytosis is the uptake of solid material such as a whole bacterium, whereas pinocytosis is the uptake of droplets of extracellular liquid and the solutes dissolved in it.
- 4
What type of membrane protein is used in active transport?
Model answer
Carrier proteins embedded in the cell membrane.
- 5
Why do endocytosis and exocytosis both require energy from ATP?
Model answer
ATP is needed to move the vesicles along the cytoskeleton and to change the shape of the membrane as vesicles are formed and fused.
- 6
How does a cell release a protein such as a digestive enzyme that is far too large to cross the membrane?
Model answer
The protein is packaged into secretory vesicles by the Golgi apparatus, and these vesicles fuse with the cell surface membrane and release the protein by exocytosis.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Exchange and Transport, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
