Overview
Recall questions on passive transport and simple diffusion, facilitated diffusion through carrier and channel proteins, osmosis and aquaporins, which molecules cross the bilayer directly, the water potential equation, and finding the water potential of plant tissue with sucrose solutions.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is facilitated diffusion?
How does a carrier protein move a molecule by facilitated diffusion?
Why does the rate of facilitated diffusion level off even when the external concentration keeps rising?
How does the size of a molecule affect the way it is transported across a membrane?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by passive transport?
Model answer
The movement of a substance across a membrane down a gradient using only the kinetic energy of the particles, with no metabolic energy from ATP required.
- 2
How does the size of a molecule affect the way it is transported across a membrane?
Model answer
Small molecules pass rapidly through the bilayer or through protein channels, larger ones cross more slowly and usually need a carrier protein, and very large molecules cannot cross at all and must be moved in vesicles.
- 3
Name two gases that cross the cell surface membrane by simple diffusion.
Model answer
Oxygen (O₂) and carbon dioxide (CO₂).
- 4
State three factors that would increase the rate of simple diffusion across a membrane.
Model answer
A steeper concentration gradient, a larger surface area, and a shorter diffusion distance across the membrane.
- 5
Define diffusion.
Model answer
The net movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration, down a concentration gradient, until they are evenly distributed.
- 6
What is facilitated diffusion?
Model answer
The passive movement of a substance down its concentration gradient through a specific transport protein in the membrane.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Exchange and Transport, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
