Debris entrainment, transport and the scale of glacial landforms
- 3 things to know
- Paper 1
Overview
How glaciers entrain debris, supraglacial, englacial and subglacial load, why glacial deposits are unsorted, macro, meso and micro-scale landforms, and the landforms of the sub-glacial, ice-marginal, proglacial and periglacial process environments.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Which landforms are typical of the sub-glacial process environment?
What are meso-scale glacial landforms? Give examples.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is entrainment in a glacial system?
Model answer
The process by which a glacier picks up rock debris, either from its bed and valley sides or from material falling onto the ice, so that it can be carried away.
- 2
How is debris entrained at the base of a glacier?
Model answer
Meltwater refreezes around loosened blocks of bedrock so they are pulled away as the ice moves, and fragments broken off by crushing and abrasion are incorporated into the basal ice.
- 3
What is supraglacial load and where does it come from?
Model answer
Debris carried on the surface of the glacier, mainly rock loosened by freeze-thaw on the valley sides that falls onto the ice; it collects along the margins and forms lateral and medial moraines.
- 4
What is englacial load and how does debris get there?
Model answer
Debris carried within the body of the ice; surface material falls into crevasses or is buried by fresh snow, and basal debris can be carried upward along shear planes near the snout.
- 5
What is subglacial load, and why is it important for erosion?
Model answer
Debris carried at the base of the glacier; dragged over the bed, it acts as the tools of abrasion and is itself ground down, producing fine rock flour.
- 6
Why is debris transported by glacier ice unsorted?
Model answer
Ice is solid and can carry particles of every size together, from rock flour to huge boulders, so it does not separate material by size the way flowing water does.

Every question in Glaciated Landscapes and Change, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
