Overview

Outwash plains, eskers, kames, kame terraces, kettle holes, proglacial lakes and meltwater channels, and how sorting, stratification and clast shape distinguish fluvioglacial from glacial deposits.

  1. 1

What is an outwash plain (sandur)?

    Model answer

A wide, gently sloping plain of sorted sand and gravel deposited by meltwater streams beyond the glacier's snout, in the proglacial zone.

  2. 2

How does an outwash plain form?

    Model answer

Meltwater streaming from the glacier carries and sorts sediment; as the water loses energy away from the ice it drops the coarsest material nearest the snout and progressively finer material further out.

  3. 3

Why are fluvioglacial (outwash) deposits sorted and stratified while till is not?

    Model answer

Meltwater sorts material by size as its energy falls and lays it down in layers, so outwash is sorted and stratified; till is dumped directly by melting ice with no sorting, so it is an unsorted, angular mixture.

  4. 4

    What is an esker?

    Model answer

A long, narrow, winding (sinuous) ridge of sorted sand and gravel.

  5. 5

    How does an esker form?

    Model answer

Sediment is deposited by meltwater flowing through a tunnel within or beneath the glacier; when the ice melts, this channel fill is let down onto the land surface as a ridge tracing the former tunnel's course.

  6. 6

    What is a kame?

    Model answer

A small, isolated, undulating mound or hummock of stratified sand and gravel.
