Glacial chronology and the causes of climate change
- 4 things to know
- Paper 1
Overview
Glacials, interglacials, stadials and interstadials, the lengthening Pleistocene cycles, the Anglian and Devensian glaciations and the Loch Lomond Stadial, the Holocene, the Little Ice Age and the Anthropocene, and the Milankovitch, solar, atmospheric and volcanic causes of climate change.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What are stadials and interstadials?
What is the Anthropocene, and what is its current status?
How can variations in solar output cause climate change?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What are Milankovitch cycles?
Model answer
Regular variations in the Earth's orbit and axis over tens of thousands of years: the shape of the orbit, the tilt of the axis and the wobble of the axis as it spins. Each changes how much solar energy reaches the higher latitudes.
- 2
How do Milankovitch cycles explain the timing of glacial periods?
Model answer
When the three cycles coincide so that northern summers are cool, winter snow survives the summer, ice builds up and albedo rises, which cools the planet further. The cycles set the rhythm of glacials and interglacials through the Pleistocene.
- 3
What is the difference between a glacial and an interglacial period?
Model answer
A glacial is a long cold period when ice sheets and glaciers advance, while an interglacial is a warmer period, such as the present, when ice retreats to high latitudes and altitudes.
- 4
What are stadials and interstadials?
Model answer
Stadials are shorter cold phases within a glacial or interglacial when ice readvances; interstadials are shorter warm phases within a glacial that are not long or warm enough to count as full interglacials.
- 5
How has the length of glacial cycles changed through the Pleistocene?
Model answer
In the early Pleistocene glacial cycles lasted about 41,000 years, but over roughly the last 800,000 years they have lengthened to about 100,000 years, with long glacials and short interglacials.
- 6
What was the Anglian glaciation and why is it significant in Britain?
Model answer
It was a glacial about 450,000 years ago when ice reached further south than at any other time, as far as the edge of London, and it diverted the River Thames into its present course.
