Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Define total revenue and state how it is calculated.

    Model answer

Total revenue is the money a firm receives from selling its output, calculated as price multiplied by quantity sold.

  2. 2

A firm sells 4,000 units at £15 each. Calculate its total revenue.

    Model answer

    Total revenue is £15 × 4,000 = £60,000.

  3. 3

What is average revenue, and why is the average revenue curve also the demand curve?

    Model answer

Average revenue is total revenue divided by quantity, which equals the price; since the demand curve shows the price at which each quantity can be sold, it is also the firm's average revenue curve.

  4. 4

    Define marginal revenue.

    Model answer

Marginal revenue is the change in total revenue that results from selling one more unit of output.

  5. 5

A firm can sell 5 units at £20 each or 6 units at £18 each. Calculate total revenue at each output and the marginal revenue of the sixth unit.

    Model answer

Total revenue is £20 × 5 = £100 at five units and £18 × 6 = £108 at six units, so the marginal revenue of the sixth unit is £8.

  6. 6

Why is marginal revenue below price for a firm facing a downward-sloping demand curve?

    Model answer

To sell one more unit the firm must cut the price on every unit it sells, so the revenue gained on the extra unit is offset by the revenue lost on all the earlier ones.
