Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What are the characteristics of a monopoly?

    Model answer

A single seller supplying the whole market, high barriers to entry, a product with no close substitutes, and the power to set price.

  2. 2

What is the difference between a pure monopoly and a firm with monopoly power?

    Model answer

A pure monopoly is a single firm supplying the entire market, whereas a firm with a market share of around a quarter or more is conventionally regarded as holding monopoly power even though rivals exist.

  3. 3

Name three barriers to entry that sustain a monopoly.

    Model answer

Patents or other legal protection, very high fixed and sunk costs, and control of an essential input or distribution network.

  4. 4

Why is a monopolist a price maker?

    Model answer

Because the firm is the whole industry, the downward-sloping market demand curve is its own demand curve, so it can choose either the price or the quantity, but not both independently.

  5. 5

What is on each axis of the monopoly diagram, and which curves appear on it?

    Model answer

Quantity is on the horizontal axis and price and cost on the vertical; the diagram shows a downward-sloping average revenue curve, a marginal revenue curve below it falling twice as steeply, and the firm's marginal cost and average cost curves.

  6. 6

How are the monopolist's price and output read off that diagram?

    Model answer

Output is set where marginal cost cuts marginal revenue from below, and price is read vertically up from that quantity to the average revenue curve, so price lies above both marginal revenue and marginal cost.
