Productive efficiency and perfect competition as a benchmark
- 3 things to know
- Component 01
Overview
Recall questions on productive efficiency in perfect competition, the firm's short run supply curve, weak dynamic efficiency, and perfect competition as a benchmark model.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Which efficiency condition does perfect competition meet in both runs, and which only in the long run?
Which area on a perfectly competitive firm's diagram represents total revenue at equilibrium?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
In perfect competition, where on the cost curves does productive efficiency occur, and in which run is it achieved?
Model answer
At the minimum point of the average cost curve. A perfectly competitive firm achieves it only in the long run, because entry and exit drive price down to the lowest point of average cost; in the short run a firm can produce away from that point.
- 2
Why is productive efficiency achieved only in the long run?
Model answer
In the short run the profit-maximising output need not coincide with the minimum of average cost, but in the long run entry and exit force price down to that minimum, so the firm is obliged to produce there.
- 3
Which efficiency condition does perfect competition meet in both runs, and which only in the long run?
Model answer
Allocative efficiency is met in both the short and the long run, while productive efficiency is met only in the long run.
- 4
Which area on the firm's diagram represents total revenue at equilibrium?
Model answer
The rectangle with a height equal to the market price and a width equal to the equilibrium output.
- 5
Which part of a firm's marginal cost curve forms its short run supply curve, and why?
Model answer
The portion above average variable cost, because the firm expands along marginal cost as price rises but shuts down once price falls below average variable cost.
- 6
Why is dynamic efficiency likely to be poor in perfect competition?
Model answer
Long run normal profit leaves no surplus to fund research and development, and perfect information means any innovation is copied immediately.
