Correlation, graphs and the normal distribution
- 3 things to know
- Paper 1
Overview
Frequency tables, bar charts, histograms and scatter diagrams, positive, negative and zero correlations, and the shape of a normal distribution.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a frequency table?
A frequency table shows that 4 participants scored 1, 6 scored 2 and 10 scored 3. What is the mean score?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a frequency table?
Model answer
A frequency table shows how many times each score or category occurs in a set of data. Tallies are often used to count the scores.
- 2
A frequency table shows that 4 participants scored 1, 6 scored 2 and 10 scored 3. What is the mean score?
Model answer
The mean score is 2.3. The scores add up to 4 + 12 + 30 = 46, and 46 ÷ 20 participants = 2.3.
- 3
What does a bar chart show?
Model answer
A bar chart compares separate categories or conditions, such as the mean score in each condition.
- 4
A bar chart shows a mean of 8 words recalled in a quiet condition and 5 words in a noisy condition. What does the chart suggest?
Model answer
The chart suggests that noise reduces recall. Participants remembered 3 fewer words on average in the noisy condition.
- 5
What does a histogram show?
Model answer
A histogram shows how often scores fall into each interval of continuous data, such as reaction times.
- 6
How does a histogram differ from a bar chart?
Model answer
A histogram shows continuous data, so its bars touch. A bar chart shows separate categories, so its bars have gaps between them.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Research Methods, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
