  1. 1

    What is a risk assessment?

    Model answer

A risk assessment is a systematic review that identifies the hazards a business faces, judges how likely each is and how serious it would be, and decides what to do about them.

  2. 2

State the two factors used to judge the seriousness of a risk.

    Model answer

The probability that the event will happen, and the size of the loss it would cause if it did.

  3. 3

Explain why a business spends more on preventing some risks than others.

    Model answer

Spending is weighed against the expected loss, so a risk that is both likely and damaging justifies far more expenditure than one that is remote or trivial.

  4. 4

Explain how a business should treat a risk that is very unlikely but catastrophic.

    Model answer

It cannot be ignored, because the business would not survive it, so it is normally insured against or covered by a contingency plan rather than by prevention alone.

  5. 5

Explain how a business should treat a risk that is likely but has only a small impact.

    Model answer

It is usually accepted and managed as a routine cost, since preventing it entirely would cost more than the losses it causes.

  6. 6

State the four broad responses available once a risk has been assessed.

    Model answer

Avoid the activity altogether, reduce the risk by preventative action, transfer it through insurance or contract, or accept and absorb it.
