Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is computer aided design?
Model answer
Computer aided design, or CAD, is the use of software to create, test and modify a design on screen before anything is physically made.
- 2
Give three benefits of computer aided design.
Model answer
Designs can be altered quickly without rebuilding a model, they can be tested by simulation before manufacture, and they can be sent electronically straight to the machines that will make them.
- 3
What is computer aided manufacture?
Model answer
Computer aided manufacture, or CAM, is the use of computer-controlled machinery to make a product, working from instructions produced by the design software.
- 4
Explain the advantage of linking CAD to CAM.
Model answer
The design passes directly to the machine without being redrawn or re-entered, so mistakes in transferring it are eliminated and the time from design to production is much shorter.
- 5
How are robots used in manufacturing?
Model answer
Robots carry out repetitive or hazardous operations such as welding, spraying, lifting and packing with consistent accuracy and without breaks.
- 6
Give three advantages of using robots in production.
Model answer
They work continuously without tiring, they repeat each operation to the same accuracy so quality is consistent, and they can do jobs that would be dangerous for people.
