Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why do consumers sometimes need protection from businesses?
Model answer
Businesses know far more about their own products than buyers do, and where competition is weak a consumer has little power to walk away, so the law sets minimum standards.
- 2
What is meant by information asymmetry between a business and a consumer?
Model answer
Information asymmetry means one side of the transaction knows much more than the other, so the seller can conceal faults or terms the buyer would otherwise reject.
- 3
Name three standards goods must meet when they are sold to a consumer.
Model answer
They must be of satisfactory quality, fit for the purpose they were sold for, and as described by the seller.
- 4
What standard must a service meet when sold to a consumer?
Model answer
It must be carried out with reasonable care and skill, within a reasonable time and for a reasonable price where none was agreed.
- 5
What remedies are available to a consumer who has bought faulty goods?
Model answer
The consumer can reject the goods and obtain a refund within a short period, or after that require them to be repaired or replaced and claim a price reduction if that fails.
- 6
Why does the law restrict misleading advertising?
Model answer
A consumer cannot verify most claims before buying, so allowing false claims would let dishonest firms win sales from honest ones and leave buyers with something they did not agree to.
