- 1
What does Eysenck's criminal personality theory claim?
Model answer
Eysenck claimed that personality is largely inherited and rooted in the nervous system. People who score high on extraversion, neuroticism and psychoticism are more likely to offend.
- 2
What is extraversion?
Model answer
Extraversion is a personality dimension marked by being sociable, outgoing and impulsive. Extraverts seek excitement and are drawn to taking risks.
- 3
What is neuroticism?
Model answer
Neuroticism is a personality dimension marked by anxiety, moodiness and emotional instability. People high in neuroticism react strongly to stress.
- 4
What is psychoticism?
Model answer
Psychoticism is a personality dimension marked by coldness, aggression and a lack of empathy. People high in psychoticism tend to be tough-minded and uncaring towards others.
- 5
How did Eysenck link arousal of the central nervous system to extraversion?
Model answer
Eysenck argued that extraverts have a cerebral cortex that is naturally under-aroused. The reticular activating system in the brainstem gives their cortex less stimulation than an introvert's receives.
- 6
Why might under-arousal make extraverts more likely to offend?
Model answer
Extraverts need extra stimulation to reach a comfortable level of arousal. Risky and criminal acts can provide the excitement that extraverts seek.
