Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What is the unconscious mind, according to Freud?

    Model answer

The unconscious mind is the part of the mind a person is not aware of. Freud believed the unconscious holds repressed wishes, memories and fears that still influence behaviour.

  2. 2

    What is repression?

    Model answer

Repression is a defence mechanism that pushes threatening or upsetting thoughts into the unconscious mind. Repressed thoughts can still affect behaviour and may appear in dreams.

  3. 3

    What is wish fulfilment?

    Model answer

Wish fulfilment is Freud's idea that dreams show unconscious wishes being satisfied. The wishes are often sexual or aggressive and date back to childhood.

  4. 4

What is the manifest content of a dream?

    Model answer

The manifest content is the storyline of the dream that the dreamer remembers. The manifest content is a disguised version of the dream's hidden meaning.

  5. 5

What is the latent content of a dream?

    Model answer

The latent content is the hidden, unconscious meaning of a dream. Freud believed dream analysis could uncover the latent content from the manifest content.

  6. 6

    What is dreamwork?

    Model answer

Dreamwork is the process that disguises latent content as manifest content. The disguise protects sleep by hiding wishes that would otherwise disturb the dreamer.
