Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is rehabilitation?

    Model answer

Rehabilitation is helping offenders change so that they stop offending and return to society. The aim is to reduce reoffending rather than simply to punish.

  2. 2

What kinds of rehabilitation programmes are used with offenders?

    Model answer

Anger management courses teach offenders to recognise triggers and control their reactions. Education, work training and drug treatment are also offered in prisons and the community.

  3. 3

How can rehabilitation increase pro-social behaviour?

    Model answer

Rehabilitation gives offenders the skills and support to live without crime. An offender who gains a job or a qualification has less reason to reoffend.

  4. 4

    What is restorative justice?

    Model answer

Restorative justice brings an offender and their victim together, with a trained facilitator, to discuss the harm caused. The offender may apologise and agree to make amends.

  5. 5

How can restorative justice reduce reoffending?

    Model answer

Hearing the victim's experience can help the offender understand the harm and feel remorse. Taking responsibility in this way may make further offending less likely.

  6. 6

What are the limitations of restorative justice?

    Model answer

Restorative justice only works if the victim chooses to take part and the offender admits the offence. Some offenders may show remorse they do not really feel.
