What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a schema in Piaget's theory?
What is assimilation?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What did Piaget mean by four invariant stages of development?
Model answer
Piaget claimed that children's thinking passes through four stages, each qualitatively different from the last. The stages always occur in the same order, and no stage can be skipped.
- 2
What is a schema in Piaget's theory?
Model answer
A schema is a mental framework of knowledge about an object, action or idea. Children build and adjust their schemas as they explore the world.
- 3
What is assimilation?
Model answer
Assimilation is fitting new information into an existing schema without changing the schema. A toddler who calls every four-legged animal a dog is assimilating.
- 4
What is accommodation?
Model answer
Accommodation is changing an existing schema, or creating a new one, to fit new information. A toddler who learns that a cat is not a dog forms a new schema for cats.
- 5
What happens in the sensori-motor stage?
Model answer
The sensori-motor stage lasts from birth to about 2 years. Babies learn through their senses and movements and gradually develop object permanence.
- 6
What is object permanence?
Model answer
Object permanence is understanding that an object still exists when it is out of sight. A baby who searches for a toy hidden under a blanket has object permanence.
