  1. 1

    What is mental health?

    Model answer

Mental health is a person's emotional, psychological and social wellbeing. Mental health affects how a person thinks, feels and copes with life.

  2. 2

What is the mental health continuum?

    Model answer

The mental health continuum is a scale running from good mental health, through struggling, to mental illness. A person can move along it in either direction over time.

  3. 3

Why is the mental health continuum a useful way to define mental health?

    Model answer

The continuum shows that mental health is not simply present or absent. Everyone has a position on it, and that position can change.

  4. 4

How is mental illness different from poor mental health?

    Model answer

Poor mental health is a period of struggling that many people pass through. A mental illness is a diagnosable condition, such as depression, that meets set criteria.

  5. 5

How common are mental health problems in England?

    Model answer

Surveys find that mental health problems are common. The Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey 2023/4 found about one in five adults in England had a common mental health condition, up from about one in six in 2014.

  6. 6

How does the prevalence of mental health problems differ between men and women?

    Model answer

Women are more likely than men to report common problems such as anxiety and depression. Men are more likely to die by suicide and less likely to seek help.
