Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is national income data used to indicate?
Model answer
It is used as an indicator of a country's economic performance and of material living standards.
- 2
Why must nominal GDP be converted to real GDP when comparing living standards over time?
Model answer
To remove the effect of inflation, so that changes reflect real changes in output rather than rising prices.
- 3
Why is GDP per capita used rather than total GDP to compare living standards?
Model answer
Dividing GDP by the population gives average output or income per person, allowing fairer comparison over time and between countries as populations differ.
- 4
Why can national income data be misleading when comparing living standards over time?
Model answer
Because it ignores changes in the distribution of income, the value of leisure, non-marketed output and the effects of production on the environment.
- 5
How does the distribution of income limit the usefulness of GDP per capita?
Model answer
Average income per head can rise while most people are no better off if the gains go mainly to a small, wealthy group.
- 6
How does non-marketed output limit national income data?
Model answer
Output that is not bought and sold, such as unpaid housework and DIY, is excluded, so GDP understates the true value of production and welfare.
