  1. 1

How did the Athenians come to occupy Pylos in 425 BC?

A fleet on its way to Sicily was held up by bad weather, and Demosthenes used the delay to fortify the headland in Spartan-held Messenia.

  2. 2

Explain why an Athenian fort at Pylos was so dangerous to Sparta.

    Model answer

It gave Athens a permanent base in Messenia from which she could encourage helots to desert, in the heart of the land that fed Sparta.

How did a Spartan force come to be trapped on the island of Sphacteria?

    Model answer

Hoplites were landed on the island off Pylos to secure it, and the Athenian fleet then won control of the water around it.

  4. 4

What offer did Sparta make to Athens while her men were cut off on Sphacteria?

    Model answer

Sparta offered peace and an alliance in exchange for the men, and made a truce, handing over her ships in the bay as a pledge.

  5. 5

Explain why Athens rejected the Spartan peace offer of 425 BC.

    Model answer

Cleon persuaded the assembly to demand far more, arguing that the trapped men gave Athens the whip hand and that better terms could still be squeezed out.

  6. 6

How was the affair at Sphacteria brought to an end?

    Model answer

Cleon went out with Demosthenes and a force of light-armed troops, and after fighting through the scrub the surviving Spartans surrendered. Thucydides records 292 prisoners taken, about 120 of them Spartiates.
