Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Which single value did the whole Spartan upbringing exist to produce above all others?
Model answer
Obedience, both to those set over a man and to the law itself, so that Spartans would hold their place in the line and do as they were told without question.
- 2
In Herodotus, how does the exiled king Demaratus explain Spartan obedience to Xerxes?
Model answer
He tells him that although the Spartans are free men they are not free in all respects, because they have a master over them, the law, which they fear far more than the Persians fear their king.
- 3
Define karteria and explain how it was taught.
Model answer
Karteria is endurance of hardship and pain without complaint, and it was taught by hunger, cold, a single cloak, hard beds and public floggings borne in silence.
- 4
Why did the training work so hard to make the young conform?
Model answer
The citizen body called itself the homoioi, the similars, and its strength lay in men who thought and acted alike, so difference and self-display were suppressed.
- 5
Define the term tresas and state how such a man was treated.
Model answer
A tresas or trembler was a man who had shown cowardice in battle, and he was shunned, mocked, made to wear patched clothing and shave part of his beard, and no one would marry into his family.
- 6
What does the treatment of the Spartiates who surrendered on Sphacteria show about Spartan values?
Model answer
They were deprived of citizen rights on their return because they had given themselves up rather than die fighting, and the rights were only restored later when Sparta could not afford to lose the men.
