- 2 things to know
- Component Group 2
Overview
Recall questions on the Jewish triumph of AD 71 and Josephus' account of it, the hundred days of games and Martial's verses, cash distributions to the plebs, Domitian's Capitoline Games, Alban festival of Minerva and secular games of AD 88, the stadium and concert hall, why games mattered politically, a spectator thrown to the dogs, Domitian's triumphs, and what spectacle reveals about emperor and people.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Describe the cash distributions the emperors made to the plebs.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Describe the triumph celebrated in AD 71.
Model answer
Vespasian and Titus rode in triumph together for the Jewish war, with Domitian riding alongside on a white horse, displaying the Temple treasures, prisoners and moving tableaux of the campaign, and ending with the execution of the rebel leader and sacrifice on the Capitol.
- 2
How useful is Josephus' account of the triumph?
Model answer
He was in Rome and describes the procession in unmatched detail, but he wrote as the pensioner of the men he was describing, so his emphasis on Roman power and Titus' restraint is not disinterested.
- 3
On what scale were the opening games of the amphitheatre held?
Model answer
Cassius Dio says the spectacles lasted a hundred days, with gladiators, beast hunts in which thousands of animals were killed, and a mock naval battle.
- 4
How did Martial's verses on the amphitheatre serve the emperor?
Model answer
They celebrate each spectacle as a marvel and present the building as the people's own, restored to them from a tyrant, so the poetry advertises the games as an act of imperial generosity.
- 5
Describe the cash distributions the emperors made to the plebs.
Model answer
Handouts of money to the citizen population; Domitian gave three such distributions of three hundred sesterces a head, besides food, gifts thrown to the crowd and public banquets.
- 6
Describe the Capitoline Games founded by Domitian.
Model answer
A festival held every four years in honour of Jupiter Capitolinus with Greek-style contests in poetry, oratory, music and athletics as well as chariot racing, at which the emperor presided in Greek dress wearing a golden crown.
