Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Who was Josephus, and how did he come to write in Rome?

    Model answer

A Jewish priest and commander who surrendered at Jotapata in AD 67, was freed by Vespasian, took the family name Flavius and lived in Rome on an imperial pension, where he wrote his history of the Jewish war.

  2. 2

How reliable is Josephus on the Flavians?

    Model answer

He is an eyewitness and often the only source, but he was a client of the men he describes, he blames the revolt on extremist factions, presents the Roman commanders as reluctant and merciful, and his work was approved by Titus himself.

  3. 3

    Who was Pliny the Elder?

    Model answer

An equestrian officer and procurator who commanded the fleet at Misenum and died in the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79, and who compiled an encyclopedia of the natural world dedicated to Titus.

  4. 4

Assess the strengths and limits of Pliny the Elder as a source.

    Model answer

He wrote as a contemporary insider with access to official information and preserves details of Rome, its buildings and its empire found nowhere else, but he was a loyal servant of the dynasty writing for the heir to the throne.

  5. 5

    Who was Silius Italicus?

    Model answer

A senator who was consul in the year of Nero's death and had a reputation as an informer under Nero, who later governed Asia and retired to Campania to write epic poetry.

  6. 6

What are the limits of court epic as historical evidence?

    Model answer

It records what praise was acceptable and how the regime wished to be imagined, not what happened, and its author owed his rehabilitation and his career to the men he flatters.
