  1. 1

What was unusual about Sparta's monarchy?

    Model answer

Sparta had two hereditary kings at once, one from the Agiad house and one from the Eurypontid house, each acting as a check on the other.

  2. 2

State the religious duties of the Spartan kings.

    Model answer

They held the priesthoods of Zeus and made the state sacrifices, sacrificed at the frontier and again before battle, and kept charge of the city's dealings with Delphi through the officials appointed to consult the oracle.

  3. 3

From the end of the sixth century BC, how many kings could take the army out on campaign, and why was the rule made?

    Model answer

Only one, because a quarrel between the two kings in the field had once wrecked an invasion, so afterwards a single king held the command.

  4. 4

Which judicial cases did Herodotus say belonged to the kings?

    Model answer

He says they judged the marriage of an heiress whose father had not betrothed her, cases of adoption, and disputes about the public roads.

  5. 5

Give three privileges a Spartan king enjoyed in peacetime.

    Model answer

He received a double portion at public meals, held the seat of honour at festivals and games, and was given the hides and other perquisites of the animals he sacrificed.

  6. 6

What happened at Sparta when a king died?

    Model answer

Riders carried the news through Laconia, a set number from every household including perioikoi and helots had to attend and mourn, and public business was suspended for some days.
